Life, business startups and Gardening

 I decided to pursue terrace/balcony gardening as a hobby few years back. Over the time I realized that the skills and strategies needed in maintaining and growing a small balcony garden were analogous and similar to the ones needed in setting up and growing “ventures”. 

Here are 7 points where I found glaring similarities:

1) Choosing right kind of plants and pots for your space based on sunlight and climate
 Life — Choose your battles, Choose your work based on your liking and skills
 Startup — Choose the right market segment and right solution that sells
 
2) Right watering, not letting the key nutrients water down.
Life — Focus on strengths
Startup — Focussed investment, avoid overspending

3) Appropriate and just enough nutrition for right growth and survival during harsh times
Life — Invest in skills, learning and security
Startup — same as in life, invest in long term growth, have backup and cushioning

4) Cutting down (pruning) the unessential branches and growths
Life — Cut Overspending on luxurious life style, unessential life needs
Startups — Do not diversify too much, keep focussed, channel all efforts and investments in focussed areas of strength

5) Grooming the plant right for the favorable blooming time
Life — Be proactive, ready and quick to grab every opportunity, be vigilant
Startups — Prepare and be ready for every day for leveraging on opportunity for growth and scaling

6) Appreciating and enjoying whichever flowers bloom
Life — Appreciating and enjoying small successes and milestones is energy boosting
Startups — As in life and family, appreciating milestones, successes and celebrating as a team is critical for startup growth and gelling of team

7) Keeping a persistent and disciplined approach and daily, weekly, monthly routine.

Life and Startups are very similar to gardening here .. Persistence, discipline, caring, patience and regularity makes you fit, ready and strong to take up a challenge or an opportunity

The analogies for each of these activities in all three domains are obvious and relatable to entrepreneurs and startup co-founders like myself. My observations and the inferences I have arrived at are serendipitous but worth a second look. I am sure that these seven “tests” could serve as surrogate markers towards ability of an entrepreneur / founder or even for a leader to succeed in a venture.

Shree Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroha 2026

 Two classical music festivals that I am glued to live all night are: 

1) Shree Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan ( held in last week of December every year)

2) Shree Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroha ( held in April after Shree Hanuman Jayanti)

This year I was particularly impressed with the lineup and the presentations. From April 6th 2026 to April 11 2026, I attended (on line) almost every presentation all night long. The festival typically begins around 7.30pm and continues all night till around 7.30am the next day. There are around 67-8 performers every night. 

The "maahol" of this festival held in Varanasi's Sankat Mochan Hanuman mandir premices is unique. The vibes of attending the festival live at the premises is irreproducible in online format, however for a connoisseur of classical music enjoying the performances online (thanks for live streaming on YouTube) is a consolation.

Last six nights I have attended all performances at the Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroha 2026, live online from Varanasi. All six nights were an experience and I enjoyed every moment of every performance thoroughly. This could be the best way to start my summer vacation. The daytime was occupied by the food, sleep and evenings with IPL 2026 games along with the World Chess Candidates Tournament streaming from Cyprus! The first week of my vacation has proved to be busier than most of my other working times!!

Each and every performance was worth attending as the performers were filled with emotional as well as a kind of spiritual energy. I liked all the performances of all 6 nights however there were some noteworthy names that need mention. 

To summarize the festival:

On day 1 (night) I was impressed by the performances of Yadnesh Raikar (violins) and the trio. On day 2, Pt Vishwamohan Bhatt, on day 3, Mahesh Kale, on day 5 Pt Tejendra Narayan Majumdar and Ut Masgur Ali Khan impressed me. On final night of day 6 Pt Abhay Rustom Sopori and Pt Harish Tiwari were my favorites. 

For me, Day 4 ( all night performances) was the best of the days with very emotional Pt Anup Jalota ji and Pt Jayteerth Mewundi, Pt Ajay Pohankar, Pt Satish Vyas.

Ut Akram Khan was outstanding in his Tabla accompaniment and impressed me as one of the complete Tabla player be it solo or accompaniment.
