Zehaal-e Miskeen Makun Ba-Ranjish : The brilliance of Gulzar and Amir Khusrow Dehalavi

There are some poetic creations that attract people to the language. "Zehaal - e Miskeen" is one of them !
This was a poetic creation by the poet-scholar- sufi musician of 13th century .. Amir Khusrow Dehalavi. Khusrow had influence of many languages , cultures and religions in his creations, namely Persian , Hindustani (Urdu) , Hindi and Braj ( also called Khadi boli of Hindi). His compositions had mix of words and phrases from all these languages. Khusrow has been interpreted by every artist in his own way, giving a new meaning to his creations every time one comes across them. Has influenced and inspired many artists and their creations in last eight-nine decades !
The beauty of Khusrow's creations was that even the modern day poets like Gulzar got influenced to the extent that he borrowed few lines from his quintessential creation "Zehaal -e Miskeen bakun taghaaful " to a song in Hindi movie (Gulam,1985) - "Zehaal -e Miskeen Makun Ba-Ranjish"

Sunnaaee Detee Hai Jiskee Dhadkan,

Tumhaara Dil Yaa Hamaaraa Dil Hai

The very unique thing about this poem is that every couplet of this poem has one line, the first, in Persian followed by a second line in the then Lingua Franca of Delhi called Khadi Boli (खड़ी बोली).

The original song was composed by Amir Khusro as:

ز حال مسکین مکن تغافل ورائے نیناں بنائے بتیاں

ज़े-हाले-मिस्कीन मकुन तग़ाफ़ुल; वराए नैना बनाए बतियां।

Translation:

Do not overlook (Makun Taghaaful) the Condition of the Poor/Miserable Me (Zehaal-e-Miskeen),(While You're) Blandishing (Your) Eyes (Varaaye Nainaa), and Weaving Tales (Banaaye Batiyaan)

The brilliant Gulzar adapted this for a song for the movie Ghulami (1985) as:

ज़े -हाले-मिस्कीन मकुन ब-रंजिश; ब-हाले-हिज्रां बेचारा दिल है।

सुनाई देती है जिसकी धड़कन, तुम्हारा दिल या हमारा दिल है। 

(मिस्कीन/मस्कीन = ग़रीब, बेचारा, Wretched, Poor Fellow)

Is It Yours or Mine!? (Our Hearts Are Beating in Sync… They Have Become One!)

The music was composed by the great duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal; Lata Mangeshkar and Shabbir Kumar were the singers.

She came and sat beside me in a way that the evening has turned colourful (or pleasant for me)! My mood that was a little cheerful (till then) turned a little gloomy (though) (Why? Because she is still reluctant or hesitant to accept my love!)

Sometimes the evening passes by the way the veil is lifted (gradually from the bride's face)! (The bright sunlight of the day acts as veil that hides the moon and the stars! As the evening progresses, this bright veil gets lifted gradually making the beautiful moon and stars visible).

The smoke (of sadness) rising from your chest is passing through my heart! (Your sorrows are not just yours; they penetrate my heart as well!)

Tumhaaree Palkon Se Gir Ke Shabnam Hamaaree Aankhon Mein Ruk Gaee Hai

Is this your shyness! Or, is it your modesty? What's it? The gaze got lowered as soon as it was raised! (Meanwhile) the dew drops (the tears) that fell from your eyelids have got settled in my eyes! (The tears flowing from your eyes have always made my eyes tearful!)

June : My favorite month of the year

June is my favorite month of the year. Here is a post in Marathi written earlier on June 12th, 2015 on my wordpress blog.

जून महिना हा माझा आवडता महिना आहे.  त्याचं मुख्य कारण म्हणजे … फणस पिकायला खरी सुरवात होते ती जून महिन्यात येणार्या ज्येष्ठ मासात !  अजून एक कारण म्हणजे कोकणात “अंतू शेठ” बरोबर होणारी  वार्षिक भेट आणि होणार्या चर्चा … आप्तेष्ठांचे वार्षिक स्नेह संमेलन … नानू , नाथा , गजा , बबडू , परांजप्या, गोखले आणि हमखास भेटणारे चितळे मास्तर !

जून महिना मला तसा वर्षातला सर्वात महत्वाचा महिना हि वाटतो.. कारण वर्षा च्या मध्यावर , पूर्वार्धा कडे  मागे वळून हि पहाता येतं आणि उत्तरार्धा ची आखणी हि करता येते !

मराठी साहित्या च्या दृष्टी नी मात्र जून महिन्याला  एक कारुण्य आणि उदासीनते ची किनार आहे .. त्याचं कारण हि तसंच आहे.. अनेक  प्रसिद्ध मराठी साहित्यिकानी ह्या जून महिन्यातच जगाचा निरोप घेतला … अभिजात मराठी साहित्य आणि संगीतातील अनेक  नामवंतांची पुण्यतिथी ह्या जून महिन्यातंच !

जून १ १९३४ – श्रीपाद कृष्ण कोल्हटकर , नाटककार आणि विनोदी लेखक

... अखेर जून महिन्यात संगित नाटक क्षेत्रातील एका उत्तुंग तारया ची जयंती हि आहे … जून २६  .. बालगंधर्व नारायण श्रीपाद राजहंस ! 

अभिजात मराठी साहित्याला एक अभूतपूर्व लोकप्रियता मिळवून देणार्या .. व पु , प्र के अत्रे , गदिमा आणि पु ल ह्या साहित्यिकांनी मला मराठी साहित्या ची गोडी लावली  ..  १२ जून हि पुलं ची पुण्यतिथी , म्हणून हि ब्लॉग पोस्ट आज टाकावीशी वाटली !

जन्म आणि मृत्यू ह्या विषया वर चार ओळी, जे एक अमर गीत म्हणून आपल्याला माहित आहे ...आरती प्रभू ,भास्कर चंदावरकर आणि रवींद्र साठे, यांनी या गीता ला अमरत्व दिलं आहे .. माझं  सर्वात आवडतं गाणं  ...

अंत झाला अस्ताआधी,
जन्म एक व्याधी, 
वेदनांची गाणी म्हणजे पोकळ समाधी
देई कोण हळी, त्याचा पडे बळी आधी,
हारापरी हौतात्म्य हे त्याच्या गळी साजे
कुणाच्या खांद्यावर कुणाचे ओझे !
